Kennedy School of Government to her already impressive r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p><p>Though she has a prestigious degree from The Julliard School, Chastain explains in an interview with <em>E! News,<\/em> &#8220;I just like to be challenged and learn and exercise my brain in a new way.&#8221;<\/p><p>Classes that have really stood out to her include &#8220;statistics&#8221; and &#8220;negotiation.&#8221; Of the latter, she shares, &#8220;The thing I love most about negotiation\u2014we had a class about resolving conflict. And right now we&#8217;re at a time when it feels like no one is talking to each other. As part of the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation, she writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/daily\/negotiation-skills-daily\/top-10-negotiation-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Top 10 Negotiating Skills You Must Learn to Succeed&#8221;<\/a> that &#8220;the most effective bargainers are skilled at both creating value and claiming value\u2014that is, they both collaborate and compete.&#8221;<\/p><p>One tactic is to &#8220;build rapport,&#8221; which echoes Chastain&#8217;s views on finding something in common with whomever you&#8217;re speaking with. Shonk shares, &#8220;You and your counterpart may be more collaborative and likely to reach an agreement if you spend even just a few minutes trying to get to know each other.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-113.gif\" alt=\"negotiations, communication, conflict resolution, Jessica Chastain \" \/><figcaption>A GIFu00a0from Surprised Seasons  <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/pbs-season-3-drama-hotel-portofino-Je6PVbkfGWZ5cJxmgu\" rel=\"nofollow\">Giphyu00a0PBS<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><p>Another is &#8220;active listening.&#8221; Again, this is recognizing the humanity in the other party, which can lead to compassion and positivity. <\/p><p>&#8220;Once you start discussing substance, resist the common urge to think about what you\u2019re going to say next while your counterpart is talking,&#8221; Shonk writes. &#8220;Instead, listen carefully to her arguments, then paraphrase what you believe she said to check your understanding. Acknowledge any difficult feelings, like frustration, behind the message. Not only are you likely to acquire valuable information, but the other party may mimic your exemplary listening skills.&#8221;<\/p><p>In <em>Psychology Today<\/em>&#8216;<em>s<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/counseling-keys\/202201\/the-advantages-of-open-minded-negotiations\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Advantages of Open-Minded Negotiation,<\/a>&#8221; Kimberly Key writes, &#8220;Research shows that having an open mindset and facilitating trust while embracing genuine interest in the other person\u2019s point of view works best. For instance, an open mindset results in listening and increased empathy, which, in turn, help to bring a person\u2019s defensive wall down.
