It\u2019s not uncommon for famous singers to create tracks, even entire albums<\/u><\/a>, under a fake name<\/u><\/a>. Taylor Swift<\/u><\/a> as Nils Sj\u00f6berg, Paul McCartney<\/u><\/a> as Bernard Webb, Harry Styles<\/u><\/a> as Mick Greenberg. Prince even racked up a collection of songwriter pseudonyms\u2014including Joey Coco, Alexander Nevermind, and Jamie Starr. It\u2019s often a chance to branch out creatively without any restrictions their current brand image might inflict. <\/p>

For Mariah Carey, that alias was a \u201cangry, angsty, and messy<\/u><\/a>” grunge singer, aptly named \u201cChick.\u201d <\/p>

The year was 1995, during the height of Carey\u2019s fame as an R&B\/soul artist. She was recording Daydream<\/em><\/em>, her fifth studio album, which featured tried-and-true hits like \u201cFantasy,\u201d \u201cOne Sweet Day,\u201d and \u201cAlways Be My Baby.\u201d <\/p>

Little did anyone know, but Chick was also recording an album at that time, titled Someone\u2019s Ugly Daughter<\/em><\/em>. Usually after the stroke of midnight, after recording of Daydream<\/em><\/em> had ended, and going as late as six in the morning. <\/p>

Record label executives, concerned it would damage Carey\u2019s image (a bit of a repetitive bane throughout her career), refused the album be released\u2026at least, they wouldn\u2019t allow it to be released under Carey\u2019s actual name. <\/p>

And thus, Chick\u2019s one and only album made its clandestine way into the world, and it became something of a secret legend among hardcore fans, especially those who read Carey\u2019s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, <\/em><\/em>where the singer first shared about it.<\/p>

You even catch a glimpse of Chick\u2019s dark haired, goth girl attributes in Carey\u2019s \u201cHeartbreaker\u201d music video, thanks to Bianca\u2014the key villainess in the story, who Carey plays, alongside herself.<\/p>\n
