The <a data-linked-post=\"2670444973\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/parents-song-just-a-mom\" target=\"_blank\">song<\/a> immediately draws you in because the first line plants you in the scene: \u201cPicture yourself on a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies.\u201d The song is gorgeous, <a data-linked-post=\"2637237615\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/some-strange-things-are-happening-to-astronauts-returning-to-earth\" target=\"_blank\">strange<\/a> and totally unique because it makes the listener part of the story.<\/p>\n<p>Lennon probably didn\u2019t know it at the time, but he was using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/stanford-communications-expert-says-this-is-the-best-way-to-start-a-conversation\" target=\"_blank\">communication<\/a> technique that great conversationalists and compelling public speakers use in their repertoire. It involves switching to the second person and asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.good.is\/never-struggle-with-small-talk\" target=\"_blank\">the audience<\/a> to place themselves in your scenario.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnfbowe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnfbowe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Bowe<\/a>, acclaimed speech trainer, award-winning journalist, and author of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Have-Something-Say-Mastering-Disconnection\/dp\/1400062101\" target=\"_blank\"><em> I Have Something to Say:<\/em><\/a><em> Mastering the Art of Public Speaking in an Age of Disconnection<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/05\/this-3-word-phrase-will-instantly-make-people-listen-to-you-public-speaking-expert.html?\" target=\"_blank\">tells CNBC<\/a> that he makes this connection with the audience by using the three-word phrase: \u201cImagine this scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\" data-np-autofill-form-type=\"other\" data-np-checked=\"1\" data-np-watching=\"1\">\n<figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34809.png\" alt=\"sales guy, communications, laptop, sales people, man with glasses, laptop\" \/><figcaption>A man making a sales presentation.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">via Canva\/Photos<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>                        <\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Imagine this scenario&#8230;&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Bowe says the phrase immediately does four things: It pulls your audience in by prompting them to visualize what you are about to tell them; it then brings them into the present moment with \u201cthis,&#8221; primes them for a story, and taps into an essential part of the psyche by making the story about them. On average, people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-neuroscience-of-everybody-favorite-topic-themselves\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>spend 60% of their<\/u><\/a> conversations talking about themselves. Why? Research shows that it makes them feel good. So instead of saying, \u201cJoe\u2019s grass seed is made with a unique mix of fungicide,\u201d you\u2019d start the advertisement by asking, \u201cIs there a brown patch on your lawn that, no matter how often you water it, just won\u2019t turn green?\u201d It works because you made it about the audience. They will instinctively start thinking about that brown patch, and then consider buying your product. <\/p>\n<p>Using communication tips like these can make you feel a little manipulative when interacting with others. However, it\u2019s not about being manipulative; it\u2019s really all about taking the time to understand the audience and putting them first. Imagine the scenario&#8230;being in the audience and the speaker actually cared about you.
