Annie, who goes by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mom.behind.the.scenes\/\" target=\"_blank\">@mom.behind.the.scenes<\/a> on <a data-linked-post=\"2658651267\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/women-on-tiktok-are-standing-in-for-adult-children\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok<\/a>, believes that grades aren\u2019t the best marker to measure a child\u2019s developmental or <a data-linked-post=\"2673858432\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/emotional-intelligence-expert-shares-the-best-way-to-keep-your-cool-after-negative-feedback\" target=\"_blank\">emotional<\/a> health.<\/p><p>Annie is a mother of four who has a unique family. She has one <a data-linked-post=\"2668454891\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/mother-is-fuming-that-daughters-stepmom-tells-people-shes-the-biological-parent\" target=\"_blank\">biological<\/a> child and three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.good.is\/articles\/beautiful-photo-campaign-raises-adoption-awareness\" target=\"_blank\">adoptees<\/a>. Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mom.behind.the.scenes\/video\/7531519622424677662\" target=\"_blank\">struggles her family<\/a> has had over the years, she\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mombehindthescenes.com\/about\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>mental health advocate<\/u><\/a> for children who\u2019ve been involved with the foster care system. Now, that might not make me the teacher&#8217;s favourite, because I really never look at what grades my kids have. I truly don&#8217;t care now if my kids are passionate about their grades,\u201d she opens her video. \u201cWhat matters to me is that my kids are doing their best and that they have the resources and the opportunities they need in order to do their very best.\u201d<\/p><h2>Annie believes that the child\u2019s emotional health surpasses academic achievement<\/h2><p>\u201cI care more that they are mentally okay and emotionally okay and passionate about things in life and kind to other people. And those things are not defined by a letter on a piece of paper or a percentile,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt doesn&#8217;t work that way for the rest of life; it doesn&#8217;t define who my kids are. If my kids have straight Cs, a D or two mixed in, and they&#8217;re good humans, I&#8217;m good. I care that my students put forth effort. I tell my students they cannot fail my class if they show up every day and try, and that&#8217;s true,&#8221; a teacher wrote. &#8220;Yes! You are raising good humans, not good &#8216;students.\u2019 I love that. As a teacher, that\u2019s what I care about in my students,&#8221; another added. &#8220;As a teacher, I have learned that you are correct and the system isn&#8217;t what&#8217;s best for everyone,&#8221; another teacher wrote.<\/p><h2>Motivation is the key to real learning<\/h2><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34848.png\" alt=\"happy tween boy, happy kid, kid with arms raised, headphones, laptop, green shirt\" \/><figcaption>A kid wearing headphones raising his arms in celebration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashleylambsinclair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ashley Lamb-Sinclair<\/a>, a high-school instructional coach and the 2016 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, says that motivation is often an overlooked part of child development. \u201cA willingness to learn for its own sake represents intrinsic motivation, while grades and other accolades represent extrinsic. Research has shown time and again that intrinsic motivation leads to more profound learning. The truth is that the willingness to learn leads to achievement, but so often achievement is the only part that matters to others,\u201d Lamb-Sinclair writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2017\/06\/why-grades-are-not-the-key-to-achievement\/530124\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>The<\/em><\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2017\/06\/why-grades-are-not-the-key-to-achievement\/530124\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em> Atlantic<\/em><\/u><\/a>. <\/p><p>We all have different experiences and priorities with our children, and every family has its unique advantages and struggles.
