{"id":299,"date":"2025-09-04T16:18:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/upworthy\/2025\/09\/04\/gen-z-manager-employees-dont-care\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T16:18:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:18:00","slug":"gen-z-manager-employees-dont-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodinc.com\/qa-upworthy\/2025\/09\/04\/gen-z-manager-employees-dont-care\/","title":{"rendered":"25-year-old manager explains why he loves that his Gen Z employees &#8216;don&#8217;t care anymore&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s pretty customary for older generations to dub the newest group on the working class chopping block as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/boomer-professor-perfectly-lays-out-why-gen-z-developed-a-lazy-attitude\" target=\"_self\"><u>\u201clazy<\/u><\/a>\u201d or \u201centitled.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/tag\/gen-z\" target=\"_self\"><u>Gen Z<\/u><\/a> just so happens to be the latest generation to take the mantle. <\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/real-estate-agent-has-gen-z-employee-edit-videos-ex1\" target=\"_self\"><u>Gen Z employees<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/gen-z-manager-shares-the-time-off-requests-she-rejects-ex1\" target=\"_self\"><u>managers<\/u><\/a> have done well to clap back against this criticism, and in doing so, have actually created some change in workplace attitudes.<\/p>\n<p>You can really see this shift as you scroll through the viral #genzmanager hashtag on TikTok, where you\u2019ll see slews of Gen Z Managers advocating to take time off and not working overtime\u2026all with their distinct Gen Z flair, of course.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rm-embed embed-media\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@spiicylumpia\/video\/7476275656083475743\" class=\"tiktok-embed\" data-video-id=\"7476275656083475743\">\n<section> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@spiicylumpia?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"@spiicylumpia\">@spiicylumpia<\/a> \u201cTime off is a request, not a guarantee\u201d bihhh not in my house   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/fyp?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"fyp\">#fyp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/genz?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"genz\">#genz<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/manager?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"manager\">#manager<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-Neon-7246880873890466566?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound  - Neon\">\u266c original sound  &#8211; Neon<\/a> <\/section>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"rm-embed embed-media\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@imdrebrown\/video\/7337064261451091242\" class=\"tiktok-embed\" data-video-id=\"7337064261451091242\">\n<section> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@imdrebrown?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"@imdrebrown\">@imdrebrown<\/a> I want a GenZ Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/genz?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"genz\">#genz<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/corporate?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"corporate\">#corporate<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/corporatebaddie?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"corporatebaddie\">#corporatebaddie<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7337064370880498475?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - DeAndre Brown\">\u266c original sound &#8211; DeAndre Brown<\/a> <\/section>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>In one particularly poignant video, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raitryna\/video\/7501351496840252714\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Rai<\/u><\/a>, 25, who manages 6-8 team members that are also Gen Zers or millennials, explains how this group fully understands that they \u201cwork to live, not live to work,\u201d and refuses to \u201crespect a system that doesn&#8217;t respect them or their career growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"rm-embed embed-media\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raitryna\/video\/7501351496840252714\" class=\"tiktok-embed\" data-video-id=\"7501351496840252714\">\n<section> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raitryna?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"@raitryna\">@raitryna<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7501351462283561774?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - Rai Tryna\">\u266c original sound &#8211; Rai Tryna<\/a> <\/section>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to be a good boss,\u201d he says. \u201c<em><em>You<\/em><\/em> work for <em><em>them<\/em><\/em>\u2026you should be creating an environment where they feel comfortable and confident and capable to perform their job function and ideally grow out of it. They wanna see an upward trajectory in their career, in their pay, and you should create an environment where that can happen while allowing them to live their regular life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why he personally \u201calways\u201d approves vacations, and will often find ways to make it happen without any PTO being used. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet em\u2019 go as long as they\u2019re getting their work done. Create an environment where that can happen. If you lead with empathy, you\u2019ll fuel some good energy,\u201d he concludes. <\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s this last sentence that really ties it all together. Many of us are beyond disillusioned and frustrated by the greed, burnout, and disconnection spurned by rampant capitalism, and fighting for more compassion to be brought into the equation\u2014that includes the office. <\/p>\n<p>The overwhelmingly positive feedback Rai\u2019s video received is pretty good evidence that this is a shared sentiment, especially by younger generations in leadership\u2026or those who have been burned by corporate greed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a millennial supervisor I approve this message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYUP. My last job had unlimited PTO. I had a lot of trips coming up so I barely took any days off to be COURTEOUS of my team who\u2019d have to cover me. I got laid off before any of the trips even happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take care of your people they\u2019ll take care of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAGREE! As a business owner. I give unlimited PTO. Get the job done and we are good. I want you to be at 100% when at work and always push to elevate your development as a professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a millennial manager, same. Half day to go to your kid\u2019s school event? Approved and no PTO used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honoring collaboration and empathy over hierarchy and \u201cbottom lines\u201d is an ongoing battle, and one that\u2019s seemingly been more exacerbated over the past few years.
