Despite years of studies showing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/bottled-water-vs-tap-water#:~:text=OK%E2%80%94but%20which%20type%20of,or%20safer%20than%20tap%20water.\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bottled water is no safer to drink than tap water<\/a>, Americans are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/237832\/volume-of-bottled-water-in-the-us\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">consuming more bottled water than ever<\/a>, to the tune of billions of dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/research-test-fiji-water-ex1\" target=\"_blank\">bottled water sales<\/a>.<\/p><p>People cite convenience and taste in addition to perceived safety for <a href=\"https:\/\/recipes.howstuffworks.com\/why-americans-spend-billions-bottled-water.htm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reasons they prefer bottle to tap<\/a>, but the fear factor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/teacher-explains-how-90s-kids-never-had-water-bottles-in-school-and-somehow-we-survived-ex1\" target=\"_blank\">surrounding tap water<\/a> is still a driving force. It doesn&#8217;t help when emergencies like floods cause tap water contamination or when investigations reveal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/how-a-9-year-old-captured-americas-attention-by-trying-to-get-safe-water-for-her-city\" target=\"_self\">issues with lead pipes<\/a> in some communities, but municipal water supplies are tested regularly, and in the vast majority of the U.S., you can safely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/see-what-researchers-found-when-they-tested-a-bottle-of-fiji-water-against-a-glass-of-tap-water-ex1\" target=\"_self\">grab a glass of water from a tap<\/a>.<\/p><h2>And now, a new study on nanoplastics found in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/2024\/01\/08\/bottled-water-can-contain-hundreds-of-thousands-of-previously-uncounted-tiny-plastic-bits-study-finds\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">three popular bottled water brands<\/a> is throwing more data into the bottled vs. tap water choice<\/h2><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34690.png\" alt=\"nanoplastics, bottled water, microplastics, water safety, public health, Columbia University, environmental health, tap water, plastic pollution, scientific study\" \/><figcaption>Water being poured into a glass Canva<\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><p>Researchers from Columbia University used a new laser-guided technology to detect nanoplastics that had previously evaded detection due to their miniscule size.<\/p><h2>The new technology can detect, count and analyze and chemical structure of nanoparticles, and they found seven different major types of plastic: polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate.<\/h2><p>In contrast to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bottled-water-nanoplastics-up-to-100-times-more-plastic-pnas\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2018 study that found around 300 plastic particles <\/a>in an average liter of bottled water, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.2300582121\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a> in January of 2024 found 240,000 nanoplastic particles per liter bottle on average between the three brands studied. (The name of the brands were not indicated in the study.)<\/p><p>As opposed to microplastics, nanoplastics are too small to be seen by microscope. Their size is exactly why experts are concerned about them, as they are small enough to invade human cells and potentially disrupt cellular processes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Columbia researchers found that bottled water contains hundreds of thousands of previously uncounted plastic particles\u2014particles small enough to pass into the bloodstream and travel directly into our organs.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NoC70dLakV\">https:\/\/t.co\/NoC70dLakV<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Columbia University (@Columbia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Columbia\/status\/1750566974130712715?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n                    <p>\u201cMicro and nanoplastics have been found in the human placenta at this point. They\u2019ve been found in human lung tissues. They\u2019ve been found in human feces; they\u2019ve been found in human blood,\u201d study coauthor Phoebe Stapleton, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Rutgers University\u2019s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/08\/health\/bottled-water-nanoplastics-study-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN Health<\/a>,<br \/><\/p><p>We know that nanoplastics are making their way into our bodies. We just don&#8217;t have enough research yet on what that means for our health, and we still have more questions than answers. How many nanoplastics does it take to do damage and\/or cause disease? What kinds of damage or disease might they cause? Is whatever effect they might have cumulative? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/opinion\/2024\/01\/21\/we-dont-know-how-worried-we-should-be-about-nanoplastics-our-water-our-air\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">We simply don&#8217;t have answers<\/a> to these questions yet.<\/p><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34691.png\" alt=\"nanoplastics, bottled water, microplastics, water safety, public health, Columbia University, environmental health, tap water, plastic pollution, scientific study\" \/><figcaption>A young boy drinks from a bottle of water Canva<\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><h2>That&#8217;s not to say there&#8217;s no cause for concern.<\/h2><p>We do know that certain levels of microplastic exposure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304389421028302?dgcid=author\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have been shown to adversely affect the viability of cells.<\/a> Nanoplastics are even smaller\u2014does that mean they are more likely to cause cellular damage? Science is still working that out.<\/p><p>According to Dr. Sara Bened\u00e9 of the Spanish National Research Council\u2019s Institute of Food Science Research, it&#8217;s not just the plastics themselves that might cause damage, but what they may bring along with them. \u201c[Microparticles and nanoparticles] have the ability to bind all kinds of compounds when they come into contact with fluids, thus acting as carriers of all kinds of substances including environmental pollutants, toxins, antibiotics, or microorganisms,\u201d Dr. Bened\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/are-plastic-particles-in-bottled-water-harmful-to-health#Detecting-plastic-nanoparticles-in-water\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told Medical News Today.<\/a><\/p><p>Where is this plastic in water coming from?<\/p><h2>This study focused on bottled water, which is almost always packaged in plastic. The filters used to filter the water before bottling are also frequently made from plastic.<\/h2><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34692.png\" alt=\"nanoplastics, bottled water, microplastics, water safety, public health, Columbia University, environmental health, tap water, plastic pollution, scientific study\" \/><figcaption>A reusable water bottle Canva<\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><p>Is it possible that some of these nanoplastics were already present in the water from their original sources? Again, research is always evolving on this front, but <a href=\"https:\/\/cdnsciencepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1139\/er-2021-0048\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">microplastics have been detected in lakes, streams and other freshwater sources<\/a>, so it&#8217;s not a big stretch to imagine that nanoplastics may be making their way into freshwater ecosystems as well. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/microplastics-in-our-waters-an-unquestionable-concern\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">microplastics are found at much higher levels in bottled water than tap water,<\/a> so it&#8217;s also not a stretch to assume that most of the nanoplastics are likely coming from the bottling process and packaging rather than from freshwater sources.<\/p><h2>The reality is, though, we simply don&#8217;t know yet.<\/h2><p>\u201cBased on other studies we expected most of the microplastics in bottled water would come from leakage of the plastic bottle itself, which is typically made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic,\u201d lead author Naixin Qian, a doctoral student in chemistry at Columbia University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/08\/health\/bottled-water-nanoplastics-study-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN Health<\/a>. \u201cHowever, we found there\u2019s actually many diverse types of plastics in a bottle of water, and that different plastic types have different size distributions. The PET particles were larger, while others were down to 200 nanometers, which is much, much smaller.\u201d<\/p><p><br \/><\/p><p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">        <figure class=\"rkv-rebelmouse\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/good-worldwide.go-vip.net\/qa-upworthy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/09\/origin-34693.png\" alt=\"nanoplastics, bottled water, microplastics, water safety, public health, Columbia University, environmental health, tap water, plastic pollution, scientific study\" \/><figcaption>A woman drinks from a bottle of water on the beach Canva<\/figcaption><\/figure>                        <\/p><p><span><\/span>We need to drink water, and we need to drink safe water. At this point, we have plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/the-hard-truths-you-realize-when-you-get-to-paradise-and-find-it-plastered-in-plastic\" target=\"_self\">environmental reasons for avoiding bottled water<\/a> unless absolutely necessary and opting for tap water instead.
