Pedro Pascal’s bond with his sister proves that a huge age gap might even make you closer

There’s a 17-year spread between them.

Even movie and TV stars like Pedro Pascal have bad days and self-doubt. Pascal, who has been working steadily for decades but gained extra popularity in recent years for his work in The Last of Us and Gladiator 2, says he faces “existential issues” about being 50. (Rumor has it Pedro even turned down an offer to be People’s Sexiest Man Alive.)

Ironically, it’s his much younger sister, 33-year-old Lux, who snaps him out of it. The two have a beautiful sibling bond. In an upcoming piece for Elle Magazine, Pedro interviewed Lux and it’s clear from the jump that their 17-year age difference is partly what makes their bond so special.

The two were parted early on in life. Lux’s parents moved her back to their native country of Chile when she was just three years old, with Pedro staying in the States. Shortly after, their mom tragically passed away, which was terribly difficult on the whole family, including their other siblings.

So, when Pedro asked Lux what her favorite memory growing up was, it wasn’t surprising that her immediate answer was visits from him. “I just remember every time you would fly in, it felt like Christmas Day—when you are a kid, and you’re going to open all these presents, and you can’t sleep the night before because you’re just too excited.”

After Lux is asked what is the best advice they’ve shared with one another, she insists Pedro answer first. He says, “Something different every day. Especially in a period where I am facing existential issues around age, you’re the first person to empower me and to give me confidence, to the point where your lack of patience for it is what gives me confidence. Because you’re just like, ‘Enough is enough. You’re the shit,’ and you’re the person I believe the most, so that keeps me going.”

Lux’s answer is so vulnerable. “I just remember this one moment. I don’t want to give too much context about it, but I just called you crying and you were just saying no, shaking your head. Because I was telling you about what was making me cry, but you were just like, ‘Just be yourself. People will see it eventually. Just be yourself.’ And I was just like, Yes, he’s right.”

Lux identified as non-binary for some time and in 2021 publicly came out as a transgender woman. Before Lux transitioned, Pedro wrote a play called Flaca Loves Bone and sweetly shares that Lux was his muse. “I wrote that in 2009. But when I’m building things in my imagination, I see you before I see myself.”

Again, having an older sibling in Pedro helped her not only follow her dreams of becoming an actress, but also to help her make sense out of transitioning. Lux tells him, “Not only did you give me artistic tools, but I remember thinking that if there was anyone in the family who knew who I was before the rest of the people did, I just knew that you knew.”

Even when she was a teen—when Pedro was well into his 30s—he saw her completely. Lux shares how protective Pedro was, claiming that when asked why, he said, “Uh, yeah, it’s because you’re my little sister.” Lux shares, “I don’t know if you even remember that moment, but it was just so affirming for me to be like, Yeah, he knows. He knows who I am. You were treating me like your little sister from the very beginning.”

Their bonding despite their age difference isn’t just about Pedro being older. It just helps them see each other with fresh perspective. Pedro noted in an interview with Esquire, “My protective side is lethal, but I need her more than she needs me.”

Associate professor Dan Erickson at Arizona State University discusses the importance of sibling bonds in Jennifer Moore’s article, “The Science of Sibling Dynamics.” He notes, “It’s the most enduring because it is typically the longest consistent relationship. Although parents and romantic partners may often have a deeper relationship, siblings typically outlast both, as they are more likely to be present near the beginning and end of life.”

Erickson goes on to discuss family dynamics and sibling rivalry, the latter being something Pedro and Lux never seemed to have. In fact, their “them against the world” attitude is a breath of fresh air these days. Perfectly exemplified, when Pedro asks Lux what their movie reboot should be, they settle on “a sibling version of Thelma and Louise.”

Mariah Carey secretly made a grunge album in 1995. Now she's finally sharing it.

It’s not uncommon for famous singers to create tracks, even entire albums, under a fake name. Taylor Swift as Nils Sjöberg, Paul McCartney as Bernard Webb, Harry Styles as Mick Greenberg. Prince even racked up a collection of songwriter pseudonyms—including Joey Coco, Alexander Nevermind, and Jamie Starr. It’s often a chance to branch out creatively without any restrictions their current brand image might inflict.

For Mariah Carey, that alias was a “angry, angsty, and messy” grunge singer, aptly named “Chick.”

The year was 1995, during the height of Carey’s fame as an R&B/soul artist. She was recording Daydream, her fifth studio album, which featured tried-and-true hits like “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” and “Always Be My Baby.”

Little did anyone know, but Chick was also recording an album at that time, titled Someone’s Ugly Daughter. Usually after the stroke of midnight, after recording of Daydream had ended, and going as late as six in the morning.

Record label executives, concerned it would damage Carey’s image (a bit of a repetitive bane throughout her career), refused the album be released…at least, they wouldn’t allow it to be released under Carey’s actual name.

And thus, Chick’s one and only album made its clandestine way into the world, and it became something of a secret legend among hardcore fans, especially those who read Carey’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, where the singer first shared about it.

You even catch a glimpse of Chick’s dark haired, goth girl attributes in Carey’s “Heartbreaker” music video, thanks to Bianca—the key villainess in the story, who Carey plays, alongside herself.

Fast forward to now, and talk of this long-lost grunge persona has made the airwaves again. As part of Apple Music’s new live show Flowers, Carey sat down with fellow artist SZA and shared gratitude for Someone’s Ugly Daughter allowing her to “feel free when I wasn’t free yet in my life.”

A copy of the album even made its way to Carey’s hands, where she discussed the smudged lipstick, dead cockroach, and kiss print that made up the cover (all her ideas). Gotta admit, she nailed the grunge aesthetic pretty well. SZA even convinced Carey to play two tracks from the release—“Hermit” and “Love Is A Scam”—which you can hear below.

“This would have scored so many movies in the 2000s,” one fan wrote.

Another echoed, “this would have been fire on the Clueless soundtrack.”

Then, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, we heard a snippet of another song, “Prom Queen.” Carey also got to share how making that album gave her a chance to “rebel” and get out “what was in her head.”

This is not only a really cool thing to learn about an artist we all easily recognize, but a great reminder to always, no matter what “big” thing we’re working on in life, have something we’re doing that’s purely for ourselves—whether we have record labels to contend with or not.

By the way, you can find the full Someone’s Ugly Daughter album on YouTube and Spotify.

  • Fans gushed over Jessica Biel’s toned body in a white dress. Then she gave a reality check.
We all need a reality check from time to time.Photo credit: @shopyourtv/TikTok

We all know that the level of fitness achieved by celebrities we see on television isn’t attainable for many, if not most everyday people. And yet, when their sculpted bodies grace our screens, it can still activate a little voice that says “clearly you’re not doing enough.”

That’s why it’s so helpful and grounding when a celebrity is actually transparent about the work it takes to achieve their physique, so that it might quiet that self deprecating narrative and help us get a little more realistic about achieving whatever fitness goals we might have. Jessica Biel’s recent response to a fan who asked her to share her workout routine is a perfect example of that.

It all started with a clip from her Prime Video thriller series, The Better Sister, where she plays a super fit character…as is evident by how clearly toned she looks in a backless white dress worn during the show’s opening.

Several women have shared the clip on TikTok, while muttering something along the lines of “I need to get back to the gym.” One person even asked Biel to share the workout routine she does in order to get that toned. Biel saw the request, and acquiesced…but not without delivering a truth bomb or two.

“Everyone is talking…about the white dress…and I just wanted to share that that peak shape in that show is not maintainable unless you are living the strictest, most rigid lifestyle with your nutrition and with your fitness,” she said, admitting that not even she, someone who’s been notably lean and athletic their entire adult life, who has access to the best foods, best gym equipment, etc. etc., can sustain that look indefinitely.

    @jessbiel

Replying to @tori I’ve heard y’all are talking about the white dress ? I’m no expert but I want people to be healthy, safe, and strong. Remember to warm up and cool down, and let me know what other workouts you’d like to see! A big thank you to #AshleyBrown and @Ben Bruno for being the best teachers.

This bit of candidness incited a whole slew of praise in the comments section, from folks who thanked Biel for “being so real.”

“THANK YOU for saying that many if not most actors look amazing for a moment in time during shooting and that it is incredibly hard to enjoy life and look like that all the time,” on person wrote.

Another said, “Thank you for speaking about the lifestyle that comes with maintaining! this kind of transparency is so important .”

But Biel didn’t stop there. She also took the opportunity to raise awareness on how important it is, especially for women, to prioritize maintaining muscle strength and flexibility as you get older…not just achieving an aesthetic goal, or, for the love of all that is holy, getting skinnier.

And, as requested, she did end up sharing a sample lower body workout routine—something she’s currently doing to get back in Better Sister shape—which consisted of dumbbell exercises like hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts, as well as curls with a large stability ball and banded kickbacks.

She was even so kind as to break down proper form for all the moves, and didn’t edit out her being out of breath at the end of the routine, saying, “my body’s not twenty years old anymore, you know?” She’s a real one for that. For sure.

Biel then concluded her video by saying, “let’s get older and stronger together.”

The video garnered a lot of gratitude from viewers, who commended Biel for “keeping it real” and “being a great advocate for women.”

“JB is a girl’s girl,” one person gushed.

At the end of the day, it is possible for us to achieve amazing fitness goals all while juggling what life throws our way. But we are doing ourselves a disservice to think that a) it can be done with a quick fix and zero lifestyle changes, and b) that we are supposed to remain at peak fitness levels 24/7. Not even the pros do that.

If getting more fit is a goal of yours, rather than simply stealing Biel’s routine, it might be beneficial to also try to adopt her mindset about it all as well. Just sayin’.

Luckily, if you are still on the hunt for a Biel-approved workout, one of her long-time trainers, Ben Bruno, does have fitness programs to try out.

Here’s to getting older and stronger together.

Robert Redford playfully mocked his late friend Paul Newman in this delightful resurfaced clip

“I love how he’s teasing his friend even beyond the grave.”

Robert Redford was many things to many people: husband, father, heartthrob, Oscar-winning actor, trailblazer. But to fellow actor Paul Newman, he was both co-star and dear friend.

When Newman passed away in 2008, Redford wrote a touching tribute to him for Time Magazine.

“I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City,” Redford wrote. “When the studio didn’t want me for the film–it wanted somebody as well known as Paul–he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.”

One of their most powerful connections was laughter. “Whenever he’d make a mistake on set, he would enjoy it more than anybody,” Redford wrote. “I’d look at him, and he’d look at me, and I’d say, ‘You’re not fooling anybody. You’re not staring at me intensely; you’ve lost your line.’ And he’d roar with laughter.”

Redford shared their heartfelt pranks: “We played lots of pranks on each other. I used to race cars, and after he took this rare Porsche I owned for a drive, he began to get into racing. He had incredible reflexes, and he got really good, but he talked so much about it that I got sick of it. So I had a beaten-up Porsche shell delivered to his porch for his 50th birthday. He never said anything, but not long after, I found a crate of molten metal delivered to the living room of my (rented) house. It dented the floor. I then had it turned into a really ugly sculpture and dropped it into his garden. To this day, neither one of us has ever mentioned it.”

So it wasn’t surprising that even after Newman died, Redford would lovingly tease him. In a now resurfaced clip from the Pete’s Dragon press junket in 2016, film critic Kevin McCarthy compliments Redford on his performance in Captain America: Winter Soldier. He says, “There’s a moment in that movie where you walk up to your fridge and you open it up – and in your fridge is Newman’s Own spaghetti sauce.” Redford gives his trademark sly smile.

“Have you ever gone out and purchased Newman’s Own, like salad dressing?” McCarthy asks. Again Redford smiles and jokes, “No. Are you kidding? No, I like good food.” His face continues to brighten on the topic.

Redford adds, “Ready for a funny story? My wife and I were in a restaurant in Napa Valley and there was a table next to us of about seven people. And they kept looking over and commenting. And I thought, ‘We’re not gonna be left alone, they’re gonna come over and bug me’ and so forth. And sure enough, this guy comes up from the table and says ‘I’m sorry, I hate to interrupt. We’re all here and we are such fans. I just wanted to tell you how much we love your work.’ And I said ‘Well thank you.’ And he said, ‘And we love your salad dressing.’”

McCarthy laughs, then confirms, “They thought you were Paul Newman? Did you correct him or did you let it go?” Redford dryly, without missing a beat, says, “No. I was so stunned, I just stared into space for a while. But it was a great moment.”

Commenters point out how special their friendship was. “I love how he’s teasing his friend even beyond the grave,” one wrote. “I like to imagine that in that moment he knew Paul heard that comment and smiled.”

McCarthy goes on to talk about the magic of Pete’s Dragon and how it changed Redford’s character’s worldview. He asked, “Do you have something like that in your own life? Something that magical that happened that essentially changed the way you saw life?”

Redford answers quickly. “I did.” He describes being taken to the library as a child and says of the children’s books he read, “All the stories in the children’s section were about a life bigger than the one you were living in. And I got really taken with that. And the idea of fantasy. The idea of seeing a world larger than your own is where the magic was.”

Tributes to Redford are flooding in after news of his death. Director Ron Howard took to X to write, “RIP and thank you Robert Redford, a tremendously influential cultural figure for the creative choices made as an actor/producer/director. And for launching the Sundance Film Festival, which supercharged America’s Independent Film movement. Artistic game changer.”

Governor Spencer Cox of Utah, where Redford spent many cherished years until his passing, wrote on X, “Decades ago, Robert Redford came to Utah and fell in love with the place. He cherished our landscapes and built a legacy that made Utah a home for storytelling and creativity. Through Sundance and his devotion to conservation, he shared Utah with the world.”
